This month's edition will celebrate some hometown heroes as we screen Stephen Dunn's semi-autobiographical fever dream of a debut feature, Closet Monster. Winner of Best Canadian Feature Film at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, the film stars Connor Jessup in an extraordinarily empathetic performance as a teenager navigating his sexuality. Oh, and did we forget to mention the film also features Isabella Rossellini... as a talking hamster?
Singularly imaginative and deeply human, Closet Monster would go on to help launch the careers of both Dunn and Jessup. Jessup won raves for his work in the anthology series American Crime before leading the cast of the ongoing (and wildly popular) Netflix series Locke & Key. Dunn directed an episode of the acclaimed Apple TV+ series Little America, and is about to unleash the first season of the hugely anticipated Queer as Folk reboot. Dunn created the new series, which just so happens to be debuting the day after our little screening.
We are extremely pleased to be welcoming Dunn (virtually) and Jessup (in person) to introduce Closet Monster, and Dunn may or may not have a little something to show us from the new Queer as Folk as well.
The event's beautiful poster - which will be available for sale at the screening - was created by artist Eric Kostiuk Williams.
